This large feather-shaped brown seaweed is hard to find on the French coastline. It is generally found in the cold coastal waters of the Atlantic, particularly the coasts of the British Isles and Asia.
Its appearance could be confused with a leaf of lettuce, which earned it the common name sea lettuce. It is very thin yet very strong and is bright green in color. It can be found along the entire French coast, including Brittany and Normandy.
Though it originated in Asia, today wakame is widespread in Brittany, where it is cultivated at sea. It is also found in other locations around the world: Europe, Tasmania, New Zealand, Asia and Argentina.
